LETS GET OUR GEEK ON

As a sloter I think we all can fit into this definition:"The definition of geek has changed considerably over time, and there is no longer any consistent modern definite meaning. The social and rather derogatory connotations of the word make it particularly difficult to define. A definition common among self-identified geeks is: "one who is primarily motivated by passion," indicating somebody whose reasoning and decision making is always first and foremost based on his/her passions rather than things like financial reward or social acceptance. Geeks do not see the typical "geeky" interests as merely interesting, but as objects of passionate devotion"   I think we all can agree we are geeks, and proud of it...

So I thought this would be right up our alley.. VEXPLORER

VEXplorer is the next generation of an important DIY robotics design system. Over 300 parts with many pre-assembled modules which includes: a spycam that can broadcast to your TV over distances of up to 150 ft.; an enhanced robot arm with a powerful gripper that can pick up a filled soda can; and all-terrain tires to tackle most surfaces. VEXplorer also includes 4 motor, 24 gears, various coated heavy metal parts, cables, tools, screws, nuts and more.

The major mechanical parts come preassembled.  For those of us with ADHD, like my self, this is very good news.  Revell claims that you can put everything together and get it running in an hour.  Having lots preassembled it seem very reasonable.  Everything looks solid and well-built..  The gripper looks like it comes from a sci-fi film.  The gripping surface is coated in a rubbery substance, for a solid grip

VEXplorer also comes with a SolidWorks "student design kit."  Basically, this means you get a copy of SolidWorks and a limited free licence.  SolidWorks is a very powerful design tool, and knowing how to use it is a valuable skill for those who are moving into professional design fields.  Not extendable that sucks...

The controller  This controller is kind found on many low end RC cars,  just two control sticks and four shoulder buttons.

The receiver, you get 6 DC motor channels and two auxiliary ports.

The battery holder takes 6 AA batteries, but it has a standard Tamaya connectors so go to your local hobby store and get a  7.2V R/C battery pack.

The camera has a built-in microphone.  It power comes from the main receiver unit.

The camera receiver is powered by an batteries or an AC adapter and plugs directly into a TV, great fun to chase the dogs.
